Heavy Snowfall Expected in Kashmir;
Thunderstorms Likely in Himachal Pradesh
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir on January 4 and 5, with light to moderate rainfall expected in the plains. Peak snowfall is anticipated from Saturday night to Monday morning.
For Himachal Pradesh, the Shimla regional meteorological centre has issued a “yellow watch” warning for thunderstorms, light rainfall, and squalls in districts such as Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti, Shimla, Kangra, Mandi, and Chamba between January 4 and 6.
The active western disturbance over the western Himalayan region is driving these weather patterns. IMD scientist Naresh Kumar stated, "Light to moderate snowfall is expected in the region over the next 4-5 days, with heavy snowfall likely in Jammu and Kashmir."
Night temperatures across Kashmir have risen. Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 4.5°C, up from the previous night's minus 8.6°C, while Pahalgam registered minus 4.6°C.
